Guide to Services 2002-2003: Office of Information Technology

Welcome!

Welcome to the Office of Information Technology's Guide to Services for the 2002-2003 academic year. The Office of Information Technology, or OIT, serves the University community by providing the technology tools faculty, staff, and students need, plus the support and guidance they need to use them effectively. The departments of the OIT have distinct purposes, but they also combine their resources to work together when necessary.

  • The Classroom Resource Center designs, constructs, and supports multimedia-enabled classrooms on campus. It also provides training in the use of the classroom equipment and rents out portable equipment such as laptops and projectors.

  • Enterprise Technology is responsible for maintaining much of the computing infrastructure for the University, including the main academic and administrative computers and the network backbone.

  • The Faculty Resource Center is designed to aid faculty in integrating technology into their instruction. Its staff includes experts in the production of multimedia materials as well as the pedagogical implications of using them.

  • Network and Computing Support provides front-line assistance to faculty, staff, and students. The HelpDesk acts as a call center, and its staff can solve problems or direct them to the appropriate OIT personnel. Network and Computing Support staff members maintain many of the departmental servers and networks, support desktop applications, and produce technical documentation.

  • The Telecommunication Department is the University's own fully-functional telephone company. It supports telephone service to all campus offices and residence halls, long distance calling plans, and cellular phone contracts. Telecommunication is also responsible for the physical wiring for the campus network.

We hope that this guide helps you make the most of our services this year. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to call the HelpDesk at 348-2435 or send e-mail to help.desk@ua.edu.
