Information for New Employees

Starting a new job at an institution as large as The University of Alabama can be intimidating. To help you get started, Human Resource Development conducts new employee orientation sessions frequently; you need to attend one of these within 30 days of employment. Also, Academic Affairs has an orientation session every summer for new faculty members.

Telephone Service and Voice Mail

If your office does not have telephone service and/or voice mail in your name, speak with your departmental administrative staff, who will make the request with Telecommunication.

Network Service

Usually, your office will have active network connections when you arrive. If your office's connections are not working, call the HelpDesk at 348-2435 to request their activation. If you need additional connections, fill out a network service request at frcsecure.ua.edu/netcom.

Computer Accounts

In order to access your local network, you will need an account on your departmental server. Your supervisor, department head, or administrative staff should be able to assist you in getting a departmental account.

You should also get an account on bama.ua.edu. This can be used for e-mail, research, or publishing a Web site. New faculty members have accounts created for them; other employees may bring their ACTion card to the HelpDesk in A-203 Gordon Palmer Hall to get an account.

For scheduling, some departments use the central CorporateTime calendar server. If this is the case, your departmental staff should be able to get an account for you, or you can send e-mail to the HelpDesk (help.desk@ua.edu) for assistance.

If you will need access to the administrative system (student records, budgeting, purchasing, etc.), you will need a separate account. Your departmental staff will help you with this process.
