Turn to the Office of Information Technology for your research needs. Our staff will help ensure that you have access to the computers, networks, and information that you need.

Unix

All faculty, staff, and students have access to the full capacity of bama.ua.edu, the University's academic computer. It is a Sun Enterprise Server running the Solaris operating system. A wide variety of compilers and special software is installed. Please see helpdesk.ua.edu/bama for more information about using your bama account.

Supercomputing

The Alabama Supercomputer Authority (ASA) is a non-profit, state-funded corporation that manages and maintains the Alabama Supercomputer Center (ASC) and the Alabama Research and Education Network (AREN). All faculty, staff, and students are eligible for accounts on ASA's Cray SV1 supercomputer if needed for research or other academic purposes. Informational packets with account request forms are available from the HelpDesk, or you can get more information from the ASA's Web site at www.asc.edu.

Internet2

The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), and The University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH) have come together to establish high-speed Internet services between the three campuses and other Internet2 participating schools. This allows network traffic to any of the member schools to be automatically routed onto the high-capacity research network.
