Guide to Services 2002-2003: Office of Information TechnologyStudent ResourcesFaculty members and instructors should feel comfortable about giving assignments that require the use of technology. Students at The University of Alabama have access to the tools they need to complete them successfully. All students at the University have e-mail accounts on bama.ua.edu. They can use them from anywhere by going to the BamaMail Web site, bamamail.ua.edu. If a student prefers to use a different e-mail address, he/she should set an automatic forward on their bama e-mail account using a tool on the BamaMail site; the University's administration uses students' BamaMail accounts for official correspondence. Internet AccessStudents with personal computers have multiple ways to connect to the Internet. Those in the major residence halls have the opportunity to subscribe to ResNet, a high-speed network. Those living off-campus or in other non-ResNet residence halls can usually get high-speed access either through Comcast cable modem service or DSL. Dial-up access is available from numerous local and national Internet Service Providers. The University also has a small modem pool to provide free limited service. More information about the various options for Internet access is available online at helpdesk.ua.edu/internet. Computer LabsThose students who do not own their own computers can utilize the many computer labs on campus. Most are general-purpose open labs, but others are limited to a particular discipline and have specialized software. Hours of operation vary. For information on lab locations, software, and hours, see pclabs.ua.edu. |
