Web Publishing

The Office of Information Technology provides Web hosting service and assistance to faculty, staff, students, departments, and organizations on campus. The main academic computer, bama.ua.edu, has available space for every person, department, or organization that qualifies for an account. Other servers on campus also provide Web hosting. The main Web server, www.ua.edu, hosts pages for some of the major departments on campus. Some of the local area networks, such as cba.ua.edu, as.ua.edu, and sa.ua.edu, can also host sites for departments in their areas.

A variety of editing tools are in use on campus. The two most popular are Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver. FrontPage is especially popular in those divisions such as Student Affairs that have servers equipped with FrontPage Extensions. (These extensions are not installed on bama.ua.edu.) Dreamweaver is considered a professional tool, and it allows (and requires) you to have more control over your site. FrontPage is already available in many departments as part of the Microsoft Campus Agreement. Both software packages can also be purchased from the Supply Store or other retailers at educational pricing.

If you need assistance in creating or uploading your site, you may want to enroll in the Web publishing classes offered through Human Resources Development (see Professional Development, previous page). Faculty members should also take advantage of the services of the Faculty Resource Center (FRC), which include seminars, workshops, and individual consultation. The right graphics can be crucial to your Web site's success. If you want to make them yourself, you can purchase image-editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks from the Supply Store or other retailers at educational pricing.
