Guide to Services 2003-2004: Office of Information TechnologyInternet AccessThe Office of Information Technology offers Internet access for both on- and off-campus connections. Faculty, staff, students, and retirees with questions about Internet availability may contact the HelpDesk at 348-2435. Connecting Residence HallsThe Residence Hall Network (ResNet), available in most residence halls, provides subscribers with high-speed connections to the University's network and the Internet. With this service, students can connect using their own computers in their rooms at any time without tying up the telephone lines or getting a busy signal. Each ResNet connection has the same high speed as most computer labs on campus. To find out how to subscribe to ResNet, interested students should check ResNet.ua.edu. Other Internet AccessThe University has a limited number of dialup Internet connections for use at no charge by faculty, staff, students, and retirees with valid accounts on bama.ua.edu. This service was recently upgraded to provide digital 56K connections. More information on setting up a computer to use UA dialup may be found at helpdesk.ua.edu/internet/dialup. Any individual who needs more service than UA dialup can provide or who needs Internet access for other family members will want to contract with one of the many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) available in the Tuscaloosa area. OIT keeps a list of ISPs offering local service; more information is available at helpdesk.ua.edu/internet. |
