Software Licensing

The University participates in various software licensing programs. Network and Computing Support coordinates licensing paperwork and payment and assists with software distribution.

The Microsoft Campus Agreement program provides licenses for select Microsoft products for participating departments. These products are

  • Microsoft Office Standard and Professional Editions (Windows and Macintosh)
  • Microsoft Windows Upgrades
  • Microsoft FrontPage
  • Microsoft Publisher
  • Microsoft Visual Studio Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Core Client Access Licenses (CAL) (Exchange, Windows Server, SharePoint Server, and SMS client access licenses, not server licenses)
  • Microsoft SQL Server Client Access Licenses

Upgrades released during the license period are also included. Home-use licenses are available for Microsoft Office; these must only be used by faculty or staff members for University purposes. More information, including the list of participating departments and the current license terms, is online at helpdesk.ua.edu/software/microsoft.

All computers owned by University faculty, staff, students, and retirees are licensed to run antivirus software from McAfee. VirusScan for Windows and Virex for Macintosh are available at ncs.ua.edu/software. Other software downloads, such as WS_FTP, Fetch, and SSH Secure Shell, are also available from the Software Library. Copies of these programs are available at the HelpDesk for users who bring a Zip disk or blank CD-R.

Other software licenses managed by OIT include Minitab, Maple, Xwin32, SPSS, SAS, and Autocad. Further information is available from helpdesk.ua.edu/software or by calling 348-2435. Assistance with most commonly-used software on campus is available from the HelpDesk.
